Back to Red Pencils

October 2nd, 2007

The Dutch have recently decided to pull the plug on e-voting without voter-verified paper ballots. A final blow was dealt yesterday when a court in the Netherlands ruled that the use of e-voting machines in recent Dutch elections was unlawful. Not just the Dutch, but also for instance the UK, Ireland, and some others have come to this conclusion, and more will follow. The Netherlands was thus far the only country in Europe where the majority of voters cast their votes electronically.

The Bridge, a magazine of the U.S. National Academy of Engineering directed to the general audience, recently published a special issue reflecting on voting technologies (volume 37, number 2, summer 2007) that may be of interest to concerned citizens and politicians.
